Independent non-executive members of proposed NHS Integrated Care Boards

Part time roles available across England with flexibility (minimum 2 - 3 days a month).

Remuneration: £13k - £16k depending on time and experience.


Do you have the vision to shape the future of health and care for people in your area?

Integrated care systems (ICSs) are partnerships of health and care organisations, local government and the voluntary sector. They exist to improve population health, tackle health inequalities, enhance productivity and help the NHS support broader social and economic development. 

Subject to Parliamentary approval, they will be put on a statutory footing from April 2022. They will be led by an NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB), with responsibility for NHS functions and budget, and an Integrated Care Partnership, a statutory committee bringing together all system partners to produce a health and care strategy.

There are 42 ICSs covering the whole of England, each serving between 500,000 and three million people. Each NHS ICB will hold a substantial budget for commissioning high quality health and care services, with the responsibility to ensure these are delivered in a way that meets the needs of local people.

As an independent non-executive member for an NHS ICB, you will help to shape a long-term, viable plan for the delivery of the functions, duties, and objectives of the ICB, and for the stewardship of public money.

You will bring independent oversight and constructive challenge to the priorities, plans and performance of the ICB executive team, and promote open and transparent decision-making that facilitates consensus.

You will need to operate beyond traditional organisational boundaries, driving forward the vision of integration, collaboration and system-working, by forging productive relationships across local health, social care and voluntary partners.

You will have a key role in ensuring that the voice and needs of patients and communities are central to ICB discussions and decisions, so that strategies and services are inclusive and accessible to the whole population, and deliver the best possible health outcomes for all.

Applicants will bring a range of professional expertise as well as community understanding and experience to the work of the Board. You will have experience of:                    

  • leading change at a senior level 
  • working collaboratively across agency and professional boundaries
  • ensuring organisations reflect and meet the needs of the communities they serve
  • problem solving and the ability to identify issues and areas of risk
  • contributing effectively in complex professional meetings at a very senior level
  • embodying the values of openness and transparency set out in the principles-of-public-life and in Our People Promise
